The very word ghazal strikes a melodius note in the ear. Its soft, rich culture reminds you of such mastros as Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan, Talat Mehmood, Jagjit Singh etc. but here is a ghazal singer with a difference !
Sudhakar Kadam sings ghazal alright, but Marathi ghazals. Sudhakar Kadam is a little man going a long way and a day is not far when his name will become household..
It must be said to Mr. Kadam’s credit that he has acquired an audience of his own and has achieved a good deal of popularity. He has created an impression. Mr. Kadam’s success is all the more glaring because Marathi ghazal is a novelty and is relatively new to many who are familiar with the traditional concept of a ghazal that it is a romantic Urdu poetry.
But Mr. Kadam has a religious devotion to Marathi ghazals and is quite firm in his belief that it will get its due one day and he has proved it in a certain measure by his own success. Mr. Kadam’s success is not limited to this region alone, but he has wo hearts outside Maharashtra also. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to state that Mr. Kadam has a rythmic equation with Marathi ghazals. It is this proud achievement that Mr. Kadam was selected one of the top ten youths by the Cotton City Jaycees. Of course, success has not come Mr. Kadam’s way easily. He had to strive hard for it - more so in the light of the fact that he developed this new art in a realitively small town like Yavatmal. He had faith in people’s ability to grasp the essentials of this art and appreciate it. result? Mr. Kadam is now a well known figure. He manages all this after doing his regular service. He has many programmes on the Akashwani to his credit..
An admirable aspect of Mr. Kadam’s singing is that he promotes new poetry and poet by singing their compositions and lyrics. His casettes realeased by a Pune company have exceeded sale records.
Mr. Kadam’s speciality is his throw of words coupled with exact modulations. His presentation is perfect and systematic which atonce impresses and touches. Mr. Kadam is accompained by Tabla player Vithhal Kshisagar and Sarangi player Hamid Khan, but more than anything else, it is his voice that has an enduring appeal.
There can be least doubt that the tomorrow belongs to Mr. Kadam.
